Do I have to go to church?

Here is a link to a 12 page .pdf file that attempts to answer the question whether or not Christians have to go to church. I would simply post it here, but it is in outline format and that is something that would take me too long to do at the moment!

  1. The Church building is a place where people can come to learn and grow in Christ, and to worship. We must be careful to not insult God with vain worship. Man should not be lifted up and exalted as if any man deserves such praise. The pulpit should not be used for such vain adoration. No one family or person is more important in God’s eyes and all our works are ‘filthy rags.’

    1 Corinthians 3:16-23, Psalm 22:3, Matthew 18: 20, Hebrews 12:22-24, Ephesians 2:6, 1 Kings 8: 27

I worship/praise God with my lips every time I pray, he gave us the Lord’s prayer as a guideline of how we should pray. We always begin our prayer to God with praise or worship; so therfore I worship God wherever I am, because he is there also.

  2. Not exactly sure what you are aiming at, so let me just say this…

Not only can we worship God individually, we must. Our entire life is lived as a living sacrifice which is the only reasonable service of worship (Rom. 12:1). Even when we eat and drink we are to do it to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31).

My point in this entire series was not that Christians cannot or should not worship God privately, but that they must also worship God corporately. They are inseparable really. You can’t live like hell all week and expect God to hear you on Sunday. You can’t live like a saint all week and ignore the saints on Sunday.

It is not about either going to church or worshiping God privately. God expects both and if they are not both present in the life of a believer neither corporate worship nor private worship is effectual.

Hope that clears the water some.

  3. Pastor,

I agree with your comments above. I have just been thinking out loud about worship and how we worship. 1 Cor. 10:31 is one my favorite verses. It says it all!

Your series was important, don’t totally agree with everything you said, but that’s ok. I hope you didn’t think I was saying you were vain because I know you are not.

    Blessings,

    Marilyn
